This week’s news brings an ironic combination of events. First we get reports<\/a> that the US search for weapons of mass destruction is officially over with no WMDs found, long after it became obvious to everyone except Fox News fans that the WMD threat was just another big Bush lie. Then we get reports<\/a> that a well-known supply of WMDs (sarin, VX, and mustard gas), much closer to home (less than 50 miles from me) is going to be around for quite a while longer, thanks again to Bush.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The real WMDs are owned by the US government, and stored at various locations in this country, including the Bluegrass Army Depot not far from Lexington. An international treaty requires these to be destroyed by 2012. Now, it appears very unlikely that will happen. Why? Because we’ve spent so much money wreaking mass destruction on Iraq because of their non-existent weapons of mass destruction that we can no longer afford the destruction of our own weapons of mass destruction.<\/p>\n

\nThere are a few reasons to be nervous about the real WMDs, although the worst scenarios (leaks or theft by terrorists) are pretty unlikely. If the Pentagon decides to save money by trucking the stuff to another site for disposal, the risk level increases significantly. However, the worst case is not direct damage caused by these specific weapons; it’s the threat of repercussions from others as a result of our refusal to honor treaties. I know our international reputation is already so bad that it’s hard to get much worse. But if we abandon this specific treaty, because we wasted too much money blowing up a country that we accused of ignoring treaties, other countries that would have been bound by the treaty may no longer feel obliged to honor it. And WMDs that don’t get destroyed in unstable countries such as Russia are far more likely to be a threat to us. If we want to make the world less dangerous, we need to start at home by practicing what we preach.<\/p>\n

\nI’m just glad that there is no other country with the power, the arrogance, and the total disregard for innocent human life required to inflict mass destruction on another country that’s suspected of possessing WMDs in violation of international treaty.<\/p>\n

\nAnd, as long as I’m on the political bandwagon, I might as well throw in this email someone sent me about red vs. blue. If I lived in a blue state, secession would be starting to look better all the time. Based on the pronoun usage, this was obviously written by a blue-stater, not a disgruntled red-stater like myself.<\/p>\n

\n With the Blue States in hand, the Democrats have firm control of 80%
\nof the country’s fresh water, over 90% of our pineapple and lettuce, 92% of
\nall fresh fruit production, 93% of the artichoke production, 95% of
\nAmerica’s export quality wines, 90% of all cheese production, 90% of
\nthe high tech industry, most of the US low-sulfur coal, all living
\nredwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools,
\nplus Amherst, Stanford, Berkeley, CalTech and MIT.<\/p>\n

\n We can live simply but well.<\/p>\n

\n The Red States, on the other hand, now have to cope with 92% of all US
\nmosquitoes, 99% of all tornadoes, 90% of all hurricanes, 88% of all
\nobese Americans (and their projected health care cost spike), 99% of
\nall Southern Baptists, 100% of all Televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, Bob
\nJones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.<\/p>\n

\n A high price to pay for controlling the presidency.<\/p>\n

\n Additionally, 38% of those in the Red states believe Jonah was
\nactually eaten by a whale, 62% believe life is sacred unless we’re
\ndiscussing the death penalty or preemptive war, 44% believe that evolution
\nis just a theory, 53% that Saddam Hussein was involved in 9\/11 and, most
\ndifficult of all to grasp, 61% believe that George W. Bush is a person of
