I think that’s asking a little too much from the horse (and my own aging body). But since yesterday’s hunt was a fairly slow and abbreviated one, and my brother missed it, when he asked if I had enough horse left to hunt today, I decided to go for it.

Today turned out to be a little more exciting day. It’s good it worked out that way. If yesterday’s hunt had been like today’s, I would have been out of horse. As it turned out, I had plenty of horse, almost too much. Arthur was jumping eagerly today, almost too eagerly, but that’s always better than the alternative. At a few jumps, we had to hold up and yield to hounds. He made it clear that he was not happy about waiting, but we managed to avoid the disgrace of trampling hounds.

After the fairly easy days earlier in the season, today was definitely a good next step towards getting mentally and physically fit for cooler weather and hotter hunting.

The weather here is beginning to seem more like November, or maybe even December with sub-freezing temperatures a couple of nights last week.
