Thanks to the hospitality of one Bitch Pack member, and the nagging of another, Crossbo and I did some jump schooling Saturday morning. And, with a little coaching from yet another, we had a very good morning.

The joys and tribulations of being owned by horses
How Hot is it?
It’s pretty hot. I actually saw a new (to me) heat indicator this weekend, although I was later told it’s not really unusual. My horses, just standing in the pasture grazing, were not just sweating profusely; they actually had salt caked on their coats from evaporated sweat. I think that’s pretty bleepin hot! But since… Continue reading How Hot is it?
Mud Puddles and Photo Ops
My Canon has been gathering dust since Rolex, so I thought today would be a good opportunity to play with it at a local Horse Trial. But first, I had a higher priority. Crossbo has also been too idle lately (although he’s gotten more recent work than the camera), and today finally looked like a… Continue reading Mud Puddles and Photo Ops
It’s Saturday night, do you know where your horses are?
As I passed a branch of one of the big Arab thoroughbred conglomerates (Arab referring to owners, not horses) on my way to my parents’ house tonight, I noticed something that didn’t look quite right. There was a big horse on one side of a double fence, and a little horse on the other side,… Continue reading It’s Saturday night, do you know where your horses are?
Crossbo meets the Bitch Pack .. barely
Today was Crossbo’s first social outing. Our hunt was having a trail ride, and his foot has healed enough to ride, so I decided it was time for him to make his debut. The foot injury had prevented me from doing as much riding around home as I would have preferred before venturing out in… Continue reading Crossbo meets the Bitch Pack .. barely
Gandalf Who?
I got the boys’ Coggins papers today, negative of course. It’s nice to have that out of the way, although I never really worry about the results. But I couldn’t help being amused at the cute vet tech’s spelling of the names. (OK, grammar police .. does “cute” refer to the vet tech, or her… Continue reading Gandalf Who?
Rolex Rambling
I finally finished putting together the 2005 Rolex report.
Not quite a Run for the Roses
Casual acquaintances who are vaguely aware that I like horses might expect some sage comments on today’s Derby. People who know me better are probably well aware of my opinion that a two-minute sprint is simply anti-climactic the week after Rolex. Since the weather was beautiful today, rather than getting sucked into the Derby hype,… Continue reading Not quite a Run for the Roses
Rolex Rambling
This is Rolex weekend. See my Rolex website for a hint about what that means, or accounts of previous events, and, maybe sometime early next week, the story of this year’s event.
Don’t Cross Bo
A few days ago, I hinted about some impending horse news. I’m sure some of my loyal readers have been waiting with bated breath. Your wait is over. At this time, it gives me great pleasure to virtually introduce the latest member of Matt’s Motley Menagerie, an 8-year-old thoroughbred gelding named Don’t Cross Bo, aka… Continue reading Don’t Cross Bo
