Scentless, but not senseless

A beautiful winter Wednesday, beginning to feel more like spring. A glorious day to be on a horse instead of in front of a computer. Poor scenting conditions made today’s outing more of a trail ride than a hunt, but that didn’t really bother me much. My only complaint about the whole day is that… Continue reading Scentless, but not senseless

I Love my Horse

I didn’t write anything about Wednesday’s hunt because it took me two days to dry out. (I’m referring to rainfall, not alcohol consumption). It’s always a tough decision whether to hunt on days with marginal weather forecasts. Frequently, if I decide not to go, I end up looking out my office window regretting my decision.… Continue reading I Love my Horse

Tighten your bras

Today was an ideal winter Wednesday. It’s the beginning of a brief warming trend, which will continue through the end of the week, bringing joy to the saner elements of the population who think 60-ish temperatures in February are a godsend. Actually, it will be pleasant, but I’m glad it was just starting with 40-ish… Continue reading Tighten your bras

Hunting for Valentines?

Riding conditions today were marginal, at best. But, since I hadn’t been on a horse since mid-January, and marginal may be as good as it gets for a while, I decided Valentine’s Day was a good opportunity to spend some quality time with Arthur. I decided earlier in the week that I had to hunt… Continue reading Hunting for Valentines?

Tasty Turnips

I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t listen to the weather forecast last night. The morning paper predicted conditions that were marginal for hunting, considering the frozen state of the ground. I hadn’t been on a horse since New Year’s Day, and I didn’t want to pass up what might be the best chance… Continue reading Tasty Turnips

Happy New Year!

Unfortunately, I don’t have any immediate words of wisdom to start off the new year. I’m not going to make resolutions that I won’t keep (like resolving to update this site more often). I thought I had at least gotten the New Year off to a good start by finally getting an opportunity to hunt,… Continue reading Happy New Year!

Hot Hunting

Just a brief horseplay report. After a couple of weeks of rained-out hunting, today looked like the best opportunity for a while. With today’s temperatures more like October than almost December, it was a little too warm, but the prediction for tomorrow was even worse, with a temperature of 70 or above, so this morning… Continue reading Hot Hunting

Wonderful Weekend

The weather here is beginning to seem more like November, or maybe even December with sub-freezing temperatures a couple of nights last week. That makes the scenery on campus a little less revealing, but it’s better hunting weather. Since any hunting day is a good day, this weekend was doubly good.

Now, that\’s hunting!

Earlier this month, I waxed eloquent (or babbled inanely) about the joys of October Wednesdays. One of the nice things about hunting Wednesday mornings is that it leaves me in a good mood to face an afternoon of work. A fairly relaxing morning in the saddle on a Kentucky autumn morning leaves a warm feeling… Continue reading Now, that\’s hunting!

Too Hot to Hunt …

… but too nice not to. That was the dilemma this weekend. As I weighed my options on Friday night, I decided to skip the Saturday morning hunt and go out Sunday afternoon. I spent Saturday doing some yard work, and the afternoon heat made me reconsider the wisdom of running a horse into the… Continue reading Too Hot to Hunt …
