Virginia Tech Tragedy

I thought I was going to avoid this subject, because I didn’t think I had anything worthwhile to say (although that doesn’t seem to stop a lot of other people). But I can’t avoid mentioning how the depth of the tragedy suddenly hit me. Out of idle curiosity, I looked at the Facebook site of… Continue reading Virginia Tech Tragedy

How Bout Them Chicks?

I normally don’t have much to say about the entertainment world, but I have to cheer for the Dixie Chicks and their Grammy Awards. It’s somewhat ironic that I first heard the news from Clear Channel’s Republican asshole DJs griping about it. Normally the Clear Channel team’s Limbaugh-like drivel makes me want to shoot my… Continue reading How Bout Them Chicks?

Where were you?

Before even getting out of bed this morning, I was assaulted by the nauseating strains of “Have you Forgotten?” from my clock radio. My first thought was “God-DAMN! Even those Republican assholes at Clear Channel are gonna have to give up on the warmongering sometime.” Then I realized it was “in honor” of the fifth… Continue reading Where were you?

Better Living Through Chemistry

Browsing through the print edition of The Nation, I saw an advertisement from Common Sense for Drug Policy. CSDP is an organization which advocates education and treatment, rather than criminal penalties and incarceration, as a cure for drug problems. In support of their position, they cited the example of Dr. William Stewart Halsted.

Clarification, please?

I was killing some time at work this afternoon reading some of the junk that had accumulated in my mailbox this week. There was an official looking envelope from the President’s Office with the official “Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct”. Pretty dry reading, but I figured if they sent it to me, they must… Continue reading Clarification, please?

Alive but no life

It’s been almost six weeks since I posted anything here, so loyal readers may be wondering whether I have succumbed to some horrendous fate. I’m still alive, I just haven’t had any wonderful experiences or stunning insights worth writing about recently. The summer slump seems to be contagious; many blogs seem to be suffering the… Continue reading Alive but no life

The Wait is Over

As a public service to all the visitors who are being sent here by Google searches (surely you didn’t really think old-fashioned Spalding’s Bakery would have a website), I’ll provide the important information before my babble. Spalding’s new location is on Winchester Road, across from the peanut butter factory, near McDonald’s. Store hours are 6:30-noon… Continue reading The Wait is Over

An-Ti-Ci-Pa-a-a-Tion

UPDATE — They’re open! It’s that time of year when signs of coming goodness are beginning to appear. Birds are singing. Flowers are budding. Foals are frolicking. Grass is greening. As I’ve mentioned before, my official indicator of spring is my first glimpse of a bare navel walking across campus, and I saw that last… Continue reading An-Ti-Ci-Pa-a-a-Tion

Great Minds Think Alike

My boss sent me a reference to this article about one of the most potentially horrifying effects of global climate change. But it wasn’t a surprise to me. I had already seen a reference to a similar article on my former boss’s blog. It’s nice to know that I work with people who understand so… Continue reading Great Minds Think Alike

Happy Birthday, Dr. King

Today was a beautiful day in the midst of a span of nasty weather, a perfect day for a march in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. But, for the first time in many years, I selfishly left the marching to others while I participated in more recreational activities.
