A friend sent me this link. I don’t have much to add, but I thought it was worth posting here.

War is for dummies
A Knight-Ridder article describes a recent poll showing that a majority of the US population opposes a unilateral attack on Iraq. The article provides links to the complete survey, but since it’s a large PDF file I didn’t try to download it at home. But a summary in the article provided some interesting points.
Call to Conscience
I received this statement from US veterans concerning the impending invasion of Iraq. While the statement is specifically addressed to active duty troops and reservists who might be involved, I think this view from those who have been there, done that is something we all need to consider.
What’s the big deal about today?
Since I’m not a Christian, I’m not especially excited about a cult holiday celebrating the birth of a god I don’t believe in. But since our allegedly religion-neutral society embraces this one particular myth far more fervently than Kwanzaa or Diwali or Lughnasadh, I get a week of paid holiday from work for this one.… Continue reading What’s the big deal about today?
Running Government like a Business
It’s a common cliche among government-bashers that the folks running the private sector are infinitely more wise than those in the public sector, and that we’d all be better off if government was run “like a business.” Aside from the fact that government and business are not really in the same business, and therefore can… Continue reading Running Government like a Business
Hey, John! Are you reading this?
I don’t think this site has yet triggered the attention of Atty. General John Ashcroft and his thought police. I guess that’s good news and bad news. The good is obvious. The bad is that he really needs to read this article that a friend sent me. The accompanying poll could cause him to completely… Continue reading Hey, John! Are you reading this?
Sad but True
For some more thought-provoking political humor, a friend sent me this cartoon about the exploitaition of the 9/11/2001 tragedy to accomplish all kinds of political goals. It’s amazing what kinds of stuff has been railroaded through in packages like the USA Patriot Act and the Homeland Security Bill. Combined with the plans to privatize much… Continue reading Sad but True
Adding up to paranoia
For the last few days, I’ve been reflecting on the connection between a couple of disturbing recent news items. Neither one has gotten the media attention that I think they deserve, outside of the typical geek channels. First is the Pentagon’s new Total Information Awareness project, which is a massive database containing extremely detailed information… Continue reading Adding up to paranoia
Mad Magazine – Clone of the Attack
Ex-boss emailed me this gem from Mad Magazine. I went wandering around Mad‘s website to find that link so I could use it here instead of loading their copyrighted work on my server, and it was an interesting tour. Mad belongs to Warner Brothers now, and WB seems to a little bolder than many of… Continue reading Mad Magazine – Clone of the Attack
American Pride
I got this via email this morning. I think it’s been circulating for a while, but after last night’s elections, I was looking for any small reason to smile and feel good about this country. In contrast to all the real frightening stuff Ashcroft is doing, this is an anti-terrorist effort I could support.
