One of the interesting things about running a website is browsing the referrer strings in the access logs to see what brings people to the site. Some of my visitors come from other sites that link to this one, but the vast majority are referred by a search engine, and the referrer string usually contains the search keywords. Eyeballing the raw logs turns up an occasional source of amusement; based on some of the search words I’ve seen, I think some visitors have been sorely disappointed.
The summary reports provide a more high-level view of what attracts people. It’s not really surprising that the vast majority of visitors are looking for foxhunting (as one word or two), but it’s somewhat humbling to see that I rank below sheath cleaning as a popular search target.
