End of a Season

A warm and windy Wednesday finished off the hunt season, and then I vegged out with my other Wednesday weakness, West Wing. I assume it won’t be long before that season comes to an end too, and summer reruns start, turning Wednesday back into just another weekday instead of the best day of the week.

Actually, the hunt season isn’t officially over yet; there’s still a hunt scheduled for Friday. I’d been leaning towards wimping out of that one because of the rain in the forecast. Arthur clinched the decision for me today by losing a front shoe. With the Friday forecast now saying 60% chance of thunderstorms, it’s really not worth begging my farrier to replace a shoe before then. He’s been real good about last minute shoeing so I could hunt several times recently, and I hate to overdo it. So I’ll call it quits for the season and try to get the shoe replaced at his leisure so I can get into my summer routine of hacking around the farm.

Today’s hunt really wasn’t much to write about. The warm and windy conditions would have been better for sailing or kite-flying. It actually wasn’t a bad day for a trail ride with good friends either, which is sort of what the hunt turned into. I was pleased with the way Arthur jumped, including one of the trickier jumps in our territory, a stone wall with not much approach due to trees, and a drop on the far side. We did it nicely, although I did lose a stirrup on the landing.

Due to the heat and Arthur’s lost shoe, my brother and I decided to call it a day fairly early.

Tonight’s West Wing also was a little bit of a disappointment. Every once in a while, they put on an episode that seems like they’re trying to provide the same mindless drivel as every other show on TV that I never watch, and tonight’s landing gear drama was one of those. If that’s the best they could do, maybe they should have rerun one of the episodes I missed when I was shivering without electricity; the one where Toby and Charlie got into a bar fight would have been a good choice.

With extended daylight hours and warm weather right around the corner, I suppose I’ll slip into my summer routine of working and/or playing outside until dark, and then reading the newspaper over dinner by which time it’s bedtime for old farts. That may cut into my blogging time, but that routine doesn’t provide anything worth blogging about anyway, so I’m not sure what’s going to happen here. I don’t think summer reruns would be appropriate, so the frequency of posts may decrease.
